Bulletin staff report

The Pilot Butte summit road closed for the season Monday, but hiking trails will remain accessible.

The road closes each winter because of safety concerns, according to a statement from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Park Manager Susan Bethers said the north slope of Pilot Butte remains slick even when other ice thaws.

A parking area on the east side of Pilot Butte will remain open throughout the winter so visitors still can access the butte’s hiking trails. The road is expected to reopen in the spring.
