Norwyn and Barbara (Pickhard) Newby, of Bend, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 5. They plan on taking a family cruise to Alaska later in August.

The couple were married in 1967 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Portland. They met while skiing in 1964 as freshmen at Portland State College and married after Norwyn’s first year of medical school. They have four children, Dr. Jennifer Newby (and Mike Hawbecker), of Bend; Ryan Newby (and Jamie Garfield), of Renton, Washington; Dr. Chelsea Newby (and Jordan Crump), of Seattle; and Darcy Newby (and Hank Lomasney), of Seattle; and three grandchildren.

Dr. Newby worked as a neurosurgeon in Bend for 22 years, retiring in 2002. He is a member of the St. Charles Foundation board, the Sacred Art of Living Center board and The Center Foundation board. Mrs. Newby retired from her work at the Central Oregon Community College counseling office in 2002. She also worked as a teacher and homemaker. She is a member of the Bend Study Club, a Start Making a Reader Today reading volunteer, a St. Charles newborn hearing screening volunteer, school volunteer and member of the COCC Foundation board. The couple enjoys hiking, skiing, camping, travel, RVing, reading, cycling, golf and spending time with friends, pets and family.

They have lived in Central Oregon for 37 years.
