Dozens of onlookers watched as 14 monarch butterflies, each delicate and beautiful, were released into the skies above Bend Saturday by the Deschutes Land Trust.
Once Land Trust personnel removed them, one by one, from a soft-sided cage in Hollinshead Park, the butterflies set off on their autumn migration. Known for their distinctive black, orange and white pattern, the butterflies will eventually make their way to sites in Southern California.
The Land Trust was involved in rearing them through their complex life cycle from caterpillar to butterfly. More are expected to be released in the coming days.
