A woman is dead and a person in custody after a report of shots fired Wednesday morning in a sparsely populated neighborhood about a mile off U.S. Highway 97 north of Bend.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Valerie A. Peterson, 58. Detectives were interviewing a person of interest Wednesday night at St. Charles Bend but would not identify that person.

“Whether the victim and the person of interest knew each other is unknown at this time,” said Sgt. William Bailey, a sheriff’s office spokesman. “The investigation into this shooting will continue into the night, and additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.”

Early afternoon Wednesday, Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson spoke to media at the corner of Morrill Road and McGrath Road, about 100 yards from the scene of a shooting.

“At this point, this is an active homicide investigation,” Nelson said.

At around 11 a.m., a person called 911 to report gunshots in the area of Casa Court near McGrath Road. SWAT personnel and vehicles and units from various agencies were deployed to the scene, along with a dog team and a drone. The sheriff’s office used social media to urge nearby residents to stay in their homes, saying “suspect is not in custody.”

Peterson was alive when deputies arrived, but lifesaving efforts by police were unsuccessful, Nelson said.

Nelson wouldn’t discuss whether the situation was considered a “standoff,” but he said no shots were fired after police arrived.

Road access was blocked by police at three points surrounding the scene of the shooting.

The Tri-County Major Incident Team is investigating, Nelson said.

The incident marks the second Deschutes County homicide investigation into a woman’s death in five days, following the shooting death Saturday of Jenny Lynn Cashwell in Bend.
