The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body retrieved Tuesday from a South Sisters trail as 63-year-old Tom Shakespeare of Portland.

The man appeared to have been on a day hike and there was “nothing suspicious in nature at this time” about the death, said Lt. Bryan Husband.

Hikers along the trail reported the body, found about 4.5 miles up from Devil’s Lake Trailhead, just after 11 a.m. Tuesday. The hikers had found Shakespeare face down and unresponsive. They called 911 and tried CPR. A trail maintenance technician remained with the body until the sheriff’s office arrived at about 3:25 p.m. It took until about 9:30 p.m. to return with the body because of the remote area, Husband said. The site’s elevation is about 8,417 feet.

The sheriff’s office is looking for anyone in that area on Tuesday who can provide any information. Call 541-388-6501.
