LA PINE — The 2012 season opener stood for 27 games as La Pine’s most recent victory, a home decision over Madras.

But on Wednesday, La Pine built a three-goal lead and held on for a 3-2 nonconference girls soccer victory — in a season opener against Madras.

“Any coach wants their kids to win,” La Pine coach Scott Winslow said, noting that the majority of his roster is made up of freshmen and sophomores. “But to see these young kids work together after only a couple weeks together against a good Madras team … these are the teams we stack ourselves up against. And it was great to see them start the year with a ‘W.’ ”

Tiana Sutton and Olivia Ramirez each scored in the game’s first 10 minutes, the second goal off an Emily Brock assist. In the 50th minute, Alissa Likens scored to give the Hawks a 3-0 advantage.

A scramble off a corner kick resulted in the first goal by Madras in the 72nd minute. Mariah Stacona netted a free kick from 35 yards out shortly after, but La Pine held on for the win.

In other Wednesday action:

Madras 16, La Pine 0: MADRAS — Mario Urieta and Gustavo Pacheco each had three goals and an assist, leading the White Buffaloes past the Hawks in the season opener for both teams. Jose Garcia and Arman Amaya scored two goals apiece and Obed Eriza had four assists for Madras.
