The best folk and Americana songs are usually based on true stories, from the working man’s tales of Woody Guthrie to Phil Ochs’ journalistic impressions of a war-torn world. New York City-based songwriter Ryan Martin has a good story of his own: Originally from Los Gatos, California, Martin picked up guitar at 14 and started touring the West Coast circuit, but his career was almost cut short when he was injured in a car accident in 2005, according to his online biography. He bounced in and out of treatment facilities and jail before moving to New York City at age 22 to start fresh, forming a new band and releasing his solo debut album, “For All the Beautiful Losers,” in 2016. True to its title, last year’s “Gimme Some Light” finds Martin rising above his traumatic experiences on a jubilant set that veers between stately ballads and Neil Young-esque rockers. He will perform a free show at the Domino Room on Saturday with fellow New York songwriter Alex Cano and Bend group Heavy Light.

Ryan Martin, with Alex Cano, Heavy Light: 8 p.m. Saturday; free (donations for musicians suggested); Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend; or 541-408-4329.
