If you like your funk with an extra dose of grit, get ready for Diggin Dirt, which returns to Volcanic Theatre Pub on Friday after making its Bend debut at the venue with two shows last year. The California group began excavating slabs of instrumental madness as a guitar- and saxophone-fueled quintet in 2011, but didn’t reach its full potential until the addition of powerhouse soul vocalist Zach Alder in 2016. The now-septet evolved rapidly, finally hitting the road in 2017 and releasing two albums of hard-driving, soul-inflected funk-rock, including this year’s “Funkacillus Groovidophilus” (a mostly gibberish title that somehow does a better job of describing this band than real words ever could, so let’s stop here).

Diggin Dirt: 9 p.m. Friday; $10 plus fees in advance; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatre.com or 541-323-1881.
