Quick, name an Offspring song that might translate well to acoustic instruments. “Dirty Magic,” maybe? That one song from a decade ago that sounded suspiciously like Coldplay’s “Fix You” and also was named “Fix You”? While the band has always traded in catchy melodies, they are usually cloaked in mountains of punk-rock distortion and frontman Dexter Holland’s nasal whine (perfect for screaming about how you have low self-esteem, less perfect for a crooning, singer-songwriter hour). But in November, the group played some acoustic shows, including a benefit for surfer Rob Machado’s eponymous charitable foundation, and enjoyed the experience so much that it set up not one, but two acoustic tours this year. So if you’ve ever wondered what “Self-Esteem” sounds like with its iconic bass line replaced with an ukulele (there’s video on YouTube), head to Midtown Ballroom on Saturday.
