Late last year, California folk trio The Rainbow Girls recorded a raw, stripped-down cover of the old soul classic “Down Home Girl” and released it on YouTube. The group, which formed in 2010, dropped plenty of covers on the video-sharing site before, but this one went viral (to the tune of half a million hits and counting). With fans around the world begging for a recorded version, the trio of multi-instrumentalists hit the studio. They emerged in February with “Give the People What They Want,” a full album of covers both familiar and obscure, from Gillian Welch to Bob Dylan. Central Oregonians can catch the Girls’ inimitable harmonies and fierce playing at The Belfry on Friday.
