Guitar-slinging prodigy JD Simo picked up his first ax at 5 and spent much of his childhood playing with older musicians in bars he wouldn’t have been allowed in otherwise. By 15, he had dropped out of school to tour full time with a band. After spending some time as a session musician in Nashville, he formed his namesake trio SIMO. The group’s fiery, soul-inflected blues-rock (think Alabama Shakes, only with an equally powerhouse male singer-guitarist) has been turning heads everywhere from Rolling Stone to musicians such as Gregg Allman and Joe Bonamassa. That attention is sure to continue with the band’s just-released third album “Rise & Shine,” a gritty, hook-heavy romp through the back alleys of psychedelic rock, soul and R&B. The band returns to Volcanic Theatre Pub on Wednesday, with Portland’s Bitches of the Sun opening.

SIMO, with Bitches of the Sun: 9 p.m. Wednesday; $8 plus fees in advance, $10 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; or 541-323-1881.
