“Free Congo” — Ovation Performing Arts presents “Free Congo,” a new musical directed and choreographed by Jimena Shepherd. Written by local composer Jonathan Shepherd “and European and African artists throughout history,” according to ovationpa.com, the show is set in 1899, when a young Belgian girl arrives in Boma, the capital of Congo Free State, where her father is governor-general. Rather than the paradise she expected, she finds a land ruled by brutality and bloodshed. After meeting a boy named Congo, only to learn he’s a “prince deposed, rightful heir to the throne, exiled, in search of his mother. And together they begin an incredible adventure of courage, faith, and sacrifice, on a quest to ‘Free Congo,’” according to the website. Performs at 7 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday, through June 29 at Pinckney Theater, 2600 NW College Way, in Bend. Tickets are $12.50 and are available at ovationpa.com.
