Cuban guitarist Norberto Guerra will blend flamenco, Cuban son, blues and classical styles at At Liberty Arts Collaborative on Wednesday. Guerra, who splits his time between Chicago and Havana, studied in the Cuban conservatory system and the Universidad de las Artes in Havana, and has collaborated with the Havana Ballet, Havana Symphony and produced records for Acituna sin Hueso, Flamenco guitarist Rainer Mariño, Cuban rock band The Boys and Alain Daniel, according to a news release. He is currently touring the U.S. through Otros Ojos, a cultural travel group he co-founded with his wife, painter Kay Whitchurch (the At Liberty show is part of this). His multicultural mindset comes across in his music, as well, as can be heard on “DKDC,” a track from his forthcoming first studio album available at his website, norbertoguerra.com.
There’s another local connection here beyond the show: Bend writing teacher Sarah Cyr will co-lead a five-day Otros Ojos retreat to Havana in January.
Norberto Guerra: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, doors open at 6:30 p.m.; $15 plus fees in advance, $20 at the door; At Liberty Arts Collaborative, 849 NW Wall St., Bend; atlibertyarts.com or 458-206-3040.
