Valentine’s Deli — opened in October as a tight little deli in the Box Factory, next door to Riff Cold-Brewed Coffee facing Arizona Avenue. It is owned by Kari Johannsen, who named the lunch spot not for this particular day of the calendar year, but for her mother, Jane, who was born on Valentine’s Day and was bestowed the middle name of Valentine. The shop specializes in sandwiches, with 18 of them on the everyday menu. I thoroughly enjoyed my Hot Italian ($9), served on a toasted po’boy bun spread with mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. Stacked with a selection of imported meats — including salami, pepperoni, capicola and ham — the sandwich also had provolone cheese, tomato, onion and shredded lettuce. I could have done with less pepperoncini, but that’s a personal taste. Other sandwiches include turkey avocado, stacked tuna, chicken salad and red-pepper hummus. There’s a toasted all-day breakfast sandwich ($6) and a choice of soups and salads, of which the cran-apple pecan ($8) is particularly popular.
