Bulletin Staff Report

Breweries, wineries and distilleries face double the usual wait time for federal approval of labels and permits allowing them to sell new products, the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau announced Thursday.

Several Central Oregon businesses, including Deschutes Brewery and Maragas Winery, are affected by the backlog at the tax and trade bureau, known as TTB.

Usually, it takes about 15 days for a label to be processed and 75 days for a new permit to be processed, the bureau stated. But the partial government shutdown that ended on Jan. 25 left the bureau with a “significant backlog of applications and other work items.”

To cull the backlog, the bureau has authorized overtime and redeployed staff, the bureau stated. Applicants are being told to withdraw applications that are no longer necessary, only submit applications after final formations or label designs are complete and only submit complete applications.
