Apple prepares to launch 5G iPhones into unready U.S. Market (copy)

Employees wear protective masks as they walk past a sign displayed in the window of the Apple Inc. flagship store in Sydney on Sept. 18, 2020.

Apple has leased a 50,000-square-foot site in Beaverton as the company expands operations in the Portland area.

The Portland Business Journal noted the lease Tuesday, citing a local real estate market report by the brokerage Colliers.

Apple’s facility, at 3555 SW 153rd Drive, could accommodate well over 100 employees. The Oregonian reported in 2018 that Apple had opened a hardware engineering lab in Washington County and had hired two dozen employees, some of them from Intel.

It’s not clear if this new site is related to that lab. Apple is famously secretive about its research and didn’t immediately comment on the new lease Tuesday.

Bloomberg reported Monday that Apple won’t reopen its offices before October, reacting to the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19 and employee resistance to an early return to office work. It’s not clear how the delay affects lab work, which often must be done on site with sophisticated equipment in a controlled setting.

Apple has long had a presence around Portland, with software development in downtown Vancouver and an advanced research operation in southeast Portland.
