Culled from a field of 40, six outdoor companies will vie for a chance to win $15,000 during Bend Outdoor Worx BreakOut, an annual startup funding event.

The six businesses — Mystic Devices of Eagle, Colorado; Sew Go Outdoors of Bend; Lacuda of Bend; Heather’s Choice Light of Anchorage, Alaska; Ombraz Sunglasses of Seattle and Bluey Merino of Australia — will make their pitches Oct. 17 at the Tower Theatre in Bend.

Winners could receive up to $15,000 in cash grants, or financing of up to $100,000 from Business Oregon.

At last year’s event, $117,500 was awarded to five different emerging outdoor companies. BreakOut was a created by a group of entrepreneurs interested in helping the outdoor sector, founder Gary Bracelin said.

“We saw … that there needed to be another avenue for these companies get exposure to the investment community,” he said. “We had to show that outdoor companies are viable investments. They’re different then a tech company.”
