With new brewpubs up and running in San Diego, Denver and the east side of Bend, 10 Barrel Brewing has commenced a face-lift on its original pub in Bend.

10 Barrel at 1135 NW Galveston Ave. closed Sunday to make way for SunWest Builders to undertake an interior renovation. Winter seemed the best opportunity to shut the operation down, said Justin Hyde, pub operations manager for 10 Barrel.

“You have a certain amount of dollars to throw around each year, and the new locations in Denver and San Diego took precedence,” he said Monday. “We’re hitting 2018, and we requested some funds to refresh our kitchen and give us a fresh look around the front of the house.”

Plans are to reopen the pub March 9, but the exterior patio, with its fire pit, will remain open in the interim 12-6 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays starting Thursday. A food truck, The Beer Belly, will serve beer and food. Cornhole and life-sized Jenga will also be available to play, according to a company news release.

A building permit issued in December shows $130,000 worth of work is planned at the site. That doesn’t include the cost of new equipment at the 8-year-old bar and restaurant, Hyde said.

10 Barrel, a property since November 2014 of Anheuser-Bush InBev, in addition to a revamped kitchen, bar and draft system, plans a new entrance and retail display and improved flooring. Easybar, of Tualatin, is installing the new draft system at the bar, which will have 20 tap handles, up from 14, Hyde said.

The 2,900-square-foot pub is housed in a structure that dates to 1972, according to Deschutes County property records. Hyde said the layout will remain mostly the same except for relocation of the walk-in cooler and entrance.

The menu will be tweaked but keep favorites such as steak nachos and pizza, he said.

Renovations at the original 10 Barrel pub follow the opening last year of a brewpub in the company’s expanded headquarters on NE 18th Street. Improvements there doubled the size of the production brewery and added warehouse and cold storage space.

10 Barrel was busy beyond Oregon borders at the same time. With fresh capital available, the company renovated a former bar and music hall in Denver’s River North neighborhood into an 8,000-square-foot brewpub. That location opened for business in late 2016, according to The Bulletin archives.

In May 2017, 10 Barrel opened its sixth brewpub, in San Diego. The company also has brewpubs in Portland and Boise, Idaho.
