Atlas Cider Co. of Bend, which recently contracted to supply the Moda Center in Portland with cider, including Portland Trail Blazer home games, is also planning to open a taproom and restaurant in Portland, the business co-owner said Friday.
Dan McCoy said plans are to open the restaurant in April at NW Ninth Avenue and NW Couch Street in the Pearl District. McCoy and Sam McCoy, his wife and business partner, also plan on expanding the Bend taproom in the Box Factory on SW Industrial Way in spring or summer.
“It’s definitely the biggest project we’ve been involved with,” Dan McCoy said of the Portland expansion.
Atlas will be the first hard cider on tap at the Moda Center. With a production facility at SE Wilson Avenue and SE Ninth Street in Bend, Atlas is Oregon’s second-largest hard cider-maker, producing almost 250,000 gallons of cider in 2016. In March, Atlas opened a small taproom at the Washington Square Mall in Tigard.
Plans for the Pearl District Atlas include a full kitchen and pizza ovens, said Jon Kunkler, a public relations representative for the company. Atlas employs 35 people and would add about another 20 when the new location opens.
Dan McCoy said the company first delivered 100 13-gallon kegs to the Moda Center prior to the first week of the basketball season. The company is an official partner of the Trail Blazers.
“Sam grew up going to Trail Blazer games with her dad, so she’s the true Blazer fan,” he said.
The contract and partnership promise to boost the company, begun by two Central Oregon schoolteachers in 2013, to a new height.
“It’ll be interesting to see what our total volume will be throughout the year,” McCoy said.
Atlas Cider is available on 50 taps in the multipurpose arena and during concerts and other events in addition to NBA games, he said.
As for the Bend expansion, McCoy said plans are still in process but include a kitchen, which the existing taproom lacks.
“We’re looking at different options,” he said. “Nothing is nailed down.”
Atlas is distributed throughout the Northwest and as far away as Japan.
