Betsy McCool (Chairwoman)
Betsy, whose professional background is in bank management, heads Western Communications, Inc., which owns eight publications in Oregon and California, including The Bulletin. She completed management development programs at Northwestern University’s New Media Center and at the Poynter Institute. She obtained a master of business management degree from Willamette University’s Atkinson Graduate School of Management in 1986. Her undergraduate degree is from Oregon State University. Betsy is a trustee of the High Desert Museum until her second term ends in September. She has served as chairwoman of the Oregon State Parks & Recreation Commission and was a trustee for the Oregon chapter of the Nature Conservancy. She was a founding board director of Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center in Bend and has served as a director of the Community Action Foundation of Central Oregon (now known as NeighborImpact) and the Chandler Center for Community Leadership. Betsy has served on the Bend Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Willamette University board of trustees and the Oregon State University and Central Oregon Community College Foundations’ boards of trustees. She was a commissioner on the Oregon Community Service Commission. Betsy and her husband, Dan, have three daughters: Alex, Kathleen and Mallory. Together, they own Horse Butte Equestrian Center, a sport horse training and boarding facility.
