LOS ANGELES — Oregon State failed to take advantage of some early opportunities, and No. 14 Southern California took advantage of that to hand the Beavers a 38-10 loss Saturday.

“We left a lot of points out there and had many opportunities to score some points and be right in the football game,” Oregon State coach Gary Andersen said.

The offense could not get the ball in the end zone when the Beavers were deep in the red zone. Instead of a close game or a lead at the half, Oregon State (1-5 overall, 0-3 Pac-12) trailed 21-3.

Brandon Arnold recovered a muffed punt after the Beavers went three and out on their second drive. But the offense gained a yard over three plays, Jordan Choukair’s field goal attempt was tipped, and the Beavers still trailed 14-0.

Another Trojans fumble set up the Beavers at the USC 23-yard line. Once again, the Beavers could not get a first down, and Choukair missed wide left.

The Beavers forced a punt and got the ball back at their own 47. They moved the ball into the red zone thanks to an 11-yard run by Thomas Tyner and a 21-yard pass to Isaiah Hodgins, but the drive stalled at the 8, and Choukair’s 33-yard field goal made 14-3 at the start of the second quarter.

The Beavers had another USC drive stopped, but Hamilcar Rashed roughed the punter and the Trojans took advantage by taking it in for another touchdown and a 21-3 lead.

OSU had another failed opportunity when Tyner was stopped short on a fourth-and-2 play to end a drive at the USC 13.

In the third quarter down 28-3, the Beavers reached the USC 4-yard line before quarterback Darell Garretson lost a fumble.

“We were in the red zone and we’d fumble so they would get out of it,” said wide receiver Seth Collins, who led the Beavers with 91 yards receiving. “It’s really nothing they did. We just killed ourselves, to be honest. We can’t have a defeatist mindset. We have six more games left.”

With top running back Ryan Nall injured, the Beavers rushed for just 122 yards. Artavis Pierce led the Beavers with 60 yards on 12 carries. Garretson finished 16-of-29 passing for 197 yards with an interception.

USC quarterback Sam Darnold was 23-for-35 passing for 316 yards and three touchdowns for the Trojans (5-1, 3-1). The Beavers intercepted him once and sacked him once.

“I felt like we got better as a defense but there were little things,” Oregon State safety Jalen Moore said. “I dropped an interception. I feel like we have to make those plays and capitalize on those opportunities. I feel like every game we have a chance, we just have to capitalize and execute as a team.”
