SUNRIVER — Defending PGA Professional Championship winner Rich Berberian Jr. is one shot off the lead after firing an opening-round 4-under-par 67 on Sunriver Resort’s Meadows Course on Sunday.

The 29-year-old from Hooksett, New Hampshire, started at Meadows on No. 10 and made five birdies and one bogey over his first nine holes.

He trails Loren Personett, who shot a 5-under 66 on Meadows. The 52-year-old nine-time Tennessee PGA Player of the Year got off to a roaring start and was at 6 under after he eagled the 419-yard par-4 12th.

Craig Bowden, a Bloomington, Indiana, golfer who turned 49 Sunday, shot a 3-under 69 and is among four golfers two strokes to par back and the only one of that group who played the first round at par-72 Crosswater Club. Among those at 3 under is Rod Perry, the PGA Professional champion in 2013 when the event was last held at Sunriver.

Golfers will switch courses for Monday’s second round, after which the 312-player field will be cut to the top 90 plus ties. The field will be cut to 70 after three rounds. The tourney concludes Wednesday.
