Ed Barnes kneels down to interact with some of his Maremma sheepdogs that protect his goats from coyotes and other predators in his pasture near Terrebonne last week. While the Maremma breed is of European extraction, it's not part of the federal experiment to find guard dogs for livestock tough enough to guard against wolves. However, Barnes' wife, Jennifer Cole, says she thinks the Maremmas can handle them. "We could not have goats out here without them," she said.
