Mountain bike film screens Friday
Volcanic Theatre Pub will screen “Klunkerz, a Film About Mountain Bikes” at 7 p.m. Friday.
The 2006 documentary chronicles the development of off-road and mountain biking in the 1960s and 1970s in Northern California.
According to filmmaker William Savage on the Internet Movie Database, cycling enthusiasts of Northern California’s Marin County rode modified pre-WWII bicycles off-road, developing their bikes through field-testing. “Some of these cyclists were Category 1 road racers looking for a new way to train during the off-season. Others were simply fun-loving hippies looking for a new way to commune with nature,” Savage wrote. “Their early bikes were scavenged from Dumpsters and junkyards. It was from these humble beginnings that a multi- billion dollar industry, a form of recreation for the masses, and an Olympic event, were born.”
Tickets cost $5 in advance, $7 at the door. Volcanic Theatre Pub is located at 70 S.W. Century Drive, Bend.
