Ciro de Quadros, 74: Brazilian epidemiologist who navigated war zones and reimagined outmoded public health practices to lead an immunization campaign that eradicated polio in Latin America and the Caribbean. Died Wednesday in Washington of pancreatic cancer .

Lewis Katz, 72: A parking, billboard and sports mogul who through the years owned the New Jersey Nets basketball team, the New Jersey Devils hockey team and, most recently, the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper. Died Saturday in a private jet crash in Bedford, Mass.
