September 22, 1936 - January 1, 2014
Ben Castro, 77, passed away January 1, 2014, in Clayton, CA. Judi Castro, his wife of 47 years, preceded him in death on March 21, 2007.
Ben was the proud and loving father of David (Eveline) Castro of Clayton, CA: Bonnie (Scott) Holt of Alamo, CA: Becki Castro of Las Vegas, NV: and Nan (Rick) Munoz of Martinez, CA. Ben was a grandfather to Nick Castro, Kristin Castro, Tanya Holt, Matt Holt, Cody Munoz, Zachary Munoz, Nathaniel Munoz and Jameson Munoz. Ben was a great- grandfather to Hailey Rogers and Jakob Castro.
Ben was born September 22, 1936, to John and Hazel Castro and grew up in Oakland. Ben joined the US Navy in 1955 after graduating from Castlemont High School in Oakland. Ben met the love of his life, Judi Lowe, and they were married on February 14, 1960.
Ben spent his career in the underground pipeline industry working for ARB Inc. in Pittsburg, CA, and MGM Construction in Concord, CA, before retiring in 1990. In 2000, after living a few years in Santa Cruz, CA, and a lot of time in Oregon, Ben and Judi made the move of their dreams to Bend, OR, where they enjoyed the slower pace, fresh air and cultivating wonderful new friendships with old and new friends. Ben was a member of several social organizations including the Diablo Yacht Club, the Bend Moose Lodge and Bend Elks Lodge where they were very involved in the Elks RV Group. They enjoyed taking their motor home anywhere and everywhere, including any Casino along the way.
Ben's hobbies and loves were many, first was Judi, then photography, golfing, bowling, camping, fishing, RVing and bargain hunting. Oh, the bargain hunting! After Judi's passing, Ben discovered his passion for cooking. He spent many a day watching the cooking channels and trying new recipes. He never disappointed whether he was making you dinner or bringing something to a potluck.
If a man's wealth is judged by the friends he has, then Ben left us, a very, very wealthy man. He will be truly missed.
A memorial service will be held for Ben at a later date. Donations in Ben's name may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
