Central Oregon residents love their pups, and Bend’s NorthWest Crossing is no exception. Dogs from the neighborhood are being featured in their own calendar to help a local nonprofit organization.
The 2012 Dogs of NorthWest Crossing Calendar grew out of a Facebook dog photo contest held this year. Twelve pooches were ultimately asked to model, and local professional photographer Karen Cammack posed them with donated gear from Bend-based Ruff Wear.
The calendar benefits the Bend Spay and Neuter Project, which provides low-cost spay and neuter services. The calendar costs $16. It will soon be available online at the websites below (for NorthWest Crossing find it under the Play menu in Events) and area businesses, including most in the NorthWest Crossing neighborhood. They will be available into January.
Contact: Northwestcrossing.com or Bendsnip.org.
Molly, a golden retriever who belongs to Michael McCaffery and Liz Dunn, is ”Miss April” in the calendar.

CHARLOTTE, N. C. — Gary Marshall found his daughter lying in bed, squeezing her temples and screaming. Her cheeks were red from fever, her eyes red from crying. She complained of a pounding headache, and was disoriented. She didn’t know where she was. She didn’t understand why there was a tree — their Christmas tree — in the living room. On the way to the…
The holiest plant of the Christmas season may be a raggedy shrub with peeling bark that seems to grow best in a dusty backyard in Tempe, Ariz. Until recently, Americans who wished to cultivate their…
The reality: That is not true, said Dr. Richard Koller, a Bend neurologist. A sneeze does increase the pressure inside the skull a little bit, he said. People have worried that sneezes may kill brain cells because other things that increase pressure on the brain, such as some types of stroke, can lead to brain cell death or even the death of the person. However,…
Q: The last few weeks, when I do a load of laundry, the water that is discharged smells like rotten eggs. I don’t think the odor is coming up from the drain, because that doesn’t smell. I have always cleaned the machine according to the recommendations, but when I do this now, it doesn’t help. Subsequent loads don’t trigger this smell, just the first load.…
One sunny day in January, 12-year-old Megan Hinton decided to pedal her bike up and down the street for a few minutes. Her mother, Kerry Hinton, broke into a wide smile, then braced for the familiar wave of worry that crashes in on Megan’s normal childhood play. “I’m looking at her thinking, ‘Oh, yay, she’s riding her bike,’” Kerry recalled. “But there’s this other part…
