A father and son from Madras drowned at Lake Billy Chinook today while water skiing, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Searchers recovered the body of Mark Harris, 37, but were still searching for the body of his father, Gene Harris, 73.

Eight boats were on the lake from the sheriff’s office, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and other agencies as part in the search.

The sheriff’s office reported the younger Harris was skiing and became injured. His father jumped in to help and was seen swimming then struggling before he disappeared. Only the pair were aboard the boat, according to the sheriff.

Mark Harris was not wearing a flotation device when his body was recovered, according to the sheriff.
