JoAn Mann has a lovely evening of music planned Sunday night as part of her Music in the Glen house concert series in Bend.
The bill includes Portland artist Anna Tivel, who has, in the past, graced the Sisters Folk Festival with her wide-eyed, celestial folk songs. To my ears, she belongs in a similar ballpark with Anais Mitchell, Gregory Alan Isakov and Laura Veirs, where gentle picking plucks among occasionally unconventional sounds and a gorgeous voice tells stories of life in a world of natural wonders.
Then there’s Jeffrey Martin, a Eugene product whose highly literate folk songs recall Slaid Cleaves or the quieter moments of Steve Earle.
Weather permitting, part of the show will be held outside, but Mann says she has plenty of chairs, so “just bring you.” If you come to the potluck before the show, bring some food or drink to share. Also, be nice and let Mann know you’re coming. Her contact info is below.
Anna Tivel and Jeffrey Martin; 7 p.m. Sunday, potluck at 6 p.m.; $10-$15 suggested donation; Music in the Glen, 1019 N.W. Stannium Drive, Bend; RSVP to email@example.com or 541-480-8830.

The reality: That is not true, said Dr. Richard Koller, a Bend neurologist. A sneeze does increase the pressure inside the skull a little bit, he said. People have worried that sneezes may kill brain cells because other things that increase pressure on the brain, such as some types of stroke, can lead to brain cell death or even the death of the person. However,…
The holiest plant of the Christmas season may be a raggedy shrub with peeling bark that seems to grow best in a dusty backyard in Tempe, Ariz. This is Boswellia sacra, better known as the frankincense tree. The shrub’s gum resin is one of the three biblical gifts that the wise men bestowed on the infant Jesus. Until recently, Americans who wished to cultivate their…
An analysis of published research backs the notion that healthy adults who engage in strength training will build muscles better if they take protein supplements. The review, published recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, looked at 22 studies published between 1995 and 2010, which included almost 700 subjects. Twelve of the 22 studies supplemented with a combination of whey, casein, and/or milk proteins;…
Mt. Bachelor is not responsible for the injuries and ultimate paralysis a young snowboarder suffered at the ski area in 2006, the Oregon Court of Appeals affirmed on Thursday. The court upheld a decision by the Deschutes County Circuit Court that tossed out a $21. 5 million lawsuit filed in 2008 by Myles Bagley, who was 18 when he was paralyzed from the waist down…
Brandon Perryman made an everlasting mark on Mountain View’s boys basketball team, though it wasn’t by scoring a ton of points or hauling in a pile of rebounds. As a ninth-grader Brandon showed up for the first day of basketball tryouts not quite 5 feet tall. But he made the freshman team, and in the next two years he earned a spot on the junior…
