Smoke from a controlled burn south of Bend may be visible today in the area.

“It’s a pretty significant burn so I think people will be seeing it from Bend,” said Kassidy Kern, a Deschutes National Forest spokeswoman.

Fire crews plan to light the prescribed fire in the Pringle Falls Experimental Forest near Wickiup Reservoir this afternoon, Kern said. There may be more burning there throughout the week, and the fire in will cover 730 acres in all.

During the burn, the Forest Service is closing some forest roads around Lookout Mountain and smoke may affect Forest Road 42, which connects Sunriver and the Cascade Lakes Highway. Smoke from the fire probably will be visible in La Pine and Sunriver, as well as Bend.

The goal of the burning is to improve forest conditions for large ponderosa pine trees, according to the agency, making them less likely to be killed by wildfire.
