Bulletin staff report

Kirby Nagelhout Construction Co. was awarded the contract to build the new gym at Highland Magnet at Kenwood School for $4.2 million .

The Bend-La Pine Schools board approved the contract unanimously during a meeting Tuesday at Silver Rail Elementary.

The construction company was the lowest bidder for the project, according to Mike Tiller, the district’s director of facilities and maintenance.

Tiller was clear in reminding the school board the $4.2 million will be covered with insurance money, because the previous gym roof collapsed under the weight of snow. The school district also hired Kirby Nagelhout Construction Co. to demolish and clear away what was left of the gym following the collapse, which occurred Jan. 12. At that time, the construction company donated its time to clean bricks from the gym to salvage them, although the work was not part of the construction contract.

Plans for the gym are already well on their way: In July, Bend-La Pine shared some details of the gym design. The new gym will have larger bathrooms and LED lights, but feature an overall design that resembles the rest of the school.
