Bulletin staff report

Smoky skies in Central Oregon are from wildfires in northern California, the Bend fire department said Tuesday.

More than a dozen wildfires are burning in the state’s wine country, and they’ve burned more than 115,000 acres, killed at least 15 people and forced more than 20,000 to evacuate.

Central Oregon residents should expect noticeable smoke through Wednesday evening, Fire Chief Dave Howe said in a statement. Unless residents see flames or a column of smoke, they should trust that the hazy air is from the California fires and refrain from calling 911.

As of Tuesday afternoon the Department of Environmental Quality rated Bend’s air quality “moderate.” People with respiratory illnesses such as asthma should limit their outdoor activity.
