Bend firefighters practiced rescuing each other from frigid water covered by thin ice during a training exercise Tuesday at Shevlin Pond.

The firefighters used the rope bags to demonstrate how to safely save someone who had fallen through the ice.

The Bend Fire Department purposely held the training on the thin ice, which would likely break open if someone walked across the pond.

Bend fire plans to find more ice-covered spots at Shevlin Pond for two more training sessions, scheduled for Thursday and Saturday.
