A 41-year-old Bend woman was arrested Saturday following a collision on Dodds Road that killed a 38-year-old cyclist.
Shantel L. Witt was driving a 2002 GMC Sierra truck eastbound on Dodds Road at about 3 p.m. Saturday when she allegedly failed to negotiate a curve to the right near the Obernolte Road intersection, crossing through the westbound lane and striking one of three westbound cyclists before leaving the road. The third cyclist in a line of three, Marika J. Stone, of Bend, died at the scene, according to a news release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Witt was arrested on charges of first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants, one count of reckless driving and two counts of reckless endangering.
Witt was arrested for DUII in August 2014 and pleaded guilty. The criminal charges were dismissed in November 2015 following Witt’s completion of a diversion program, according to state court documents.
The sheriff’s department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call 541-693-6911.
