Third annual Bend Bike Swap

The third annual Bend Bike Swap will give cyclists of all stripes a venue to buy and trade their two-wheelers in preparation for the upcoming cycling season.

A wide variety of bicycles will be available, from toddler-sized scooters to high-end road, mountain and cyclocross bikes. Most popular — and therefore the quickest to sell out — are commuter and cruiser bikes. A helmet-fitting station for children will be on hand, as will a miniature obstacle course. Spare components, such as seat posts, crank arms and cogs will abound.

Last year, the bike swap — organized by CS Construction and Boneyard Cycling, a local bike club — tallied $48,000 in sales. A 15-percent commission benefits local nonprofits that promote active lifestyles. This year’s proceeds will go toward Bend Endurance Academy, Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation and Commute Options.

St. Patrick’s celebration

Everyone is Irish once a year, and the Bend Senior Center is ensuring this St. Patrick’s Day — or the day after — is no exception.

In its 10th year holding this dinner and dance event, the senior center has invited the local chapter of the Tony Comerford School of Irish Dance to perform a traditional jig, accompanied by Irish folk tunes. The troupe is made up of local elementary and middle school students devoted to Irish dance and culture.

Diners will be presented with a buffet featuring corned beef and cabbage, an Irish dish prepared by the in-house chef from Whispering Winds.

After dinner, The Notables Swing Band, which performs monthly at the senior center, will play swing, big band and jazz standards from the ’40s and ’50s. Reserve tickets soon, as the available 120 seats have sold out in the past.

The event from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 18 will be at Bend Senior Center, 1600 SE Reed Market Road, in Bend. Tickets are $12 or $20 at door. Contact: 541-388-1133.
