The Northwest Mothers Milk Bank and the Central Oregon Breastfeeding Coalition will host a human donor milk drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 26 at Central Oregon Locavore, 1216 NE First Street in Bend.

At the event, called The Great Northwest Milk Drive, attendees can drop off milk donations, meet other donors and milk recipients and learn from experts about the important of donor milk for preterm infants. Breastfeeding moms can also learn how to become a milk donor and can have their blood tested on site.

Northwest Mothers Milk Bank has set a goal of approving eight new donors and collecting 1,500 ounces of human donor milk, which will go to infants in the region. The milk bank has approved 26 donors from Central Oregon and has sent more than 11,600 ounces of donated milk to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Charles Bend.

To begin the process of becoming a donor, call the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank at 800-204-4444. Following a preliminary phone screening, potential donors must fill out a questionnaire, consent form and medical release and take a free blood test. For more information, call Emily Hoppe at the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank at 503-469-0955.
