A rundown of games and events to watch for locally and nationally from the world of sports (all times Pacific):

Monday

Tennis, U.S. Open in New York City, 10 a.m. (ESPN) and 3 p.m. (ESPN2): The list of absentees — including defending champion Stan Wawrinka (knee), 2016 finalist Novak Djokovic (elbow) and No. 2 seed Andy Murray (hip) on the men’s side, and six-time champ Serena Williams (pregnancy) on the women’s side — makes this a truly open Open. The year’s last Grand Slam event concludes with the women’s final on Sept. 9 and the men’s final on Sept. 10.

Thursday

NFL preseason football, Seattle at Oakland, 7 p.m. (NFL Network): It is the final tuneup game for two old AFC West rivals, who face off at Oakland Coliseum to draw the curtain on the preseason schedule. The Seahawks are among the favorites in the NFC as are the Raiders in the AFC heading into the regular season, which kicks off next week.

Friday

Prep football, Central at Bend, 7 p.m.; Clackamas at Summit, 7 p.m.; Lost River at La Pine, 7 p.m.: All 11 Central Oregon football teams are in action on the opening Friday night of the season, but only the Lava Bears, Storm and Hawks are at home. Mountain View, Ridgeview, Redmond, Crook County, Madras, Sisters, Culver and Gilchrist all kick off the new campaign on the road, all at 7 p.m.

Saturday

College football, Portland State at Oregon State, 11 a.m. (Pac-12 Network); Southern Utah at Oregon, 5:15 p.m.(Pac-12 Network): The Vikings showed tremendous defensive improvement in a 20-6 loss at BYU, allowing 365 yards to the Cougars after giving up 478 yards per game last season. The Beavers’ defense was downright horrible in the opener at Colorado State, giving up 525 yards in a 58-27 loss. In Eugene, the Ducks play their first game in the Willie Taggart era against the Thunderbirds from the Big Sky Conference.

Saturday-Sunday

Running, Sunriver Half Marathon for a Cause in Sunriver: In its seventh year, this race series is a benefit for St. Charles Cancer Services and opens on Saturday with a 5K starting at 8:30 a.m. followed by a Kids Dash at 10:15 a.m. The featured race is Sunday’s half marathon, which starts at 7:30 a.m. For more information or to register, go to www.sunrivermarathon.com.
