A driver reaching for his cell phone crashed into a utility pole in downtown Bend Wednesday night, disrupting power for several hours.
Bend resident Cameron Ashley Cox was driving south on NW Wall Street at about 7:40 p.m. when he took both hands off the steering wheel of his Jeep Cherokee to retrieve his phone, according to a Bend police press release. The 27-year-old lost control and hit a pole near Wall Street Storage at 1315 NW Wall St. The accident broke the pole, which toppled onto the building, causing thousands of dollars in damage.
The accident disrupted power for an unknown number of Pacific Power customers and closed NW Wall Street between NW Lafayette and NW Portland Avenue.
Cox was cited for reckless driving and criminal mischief. Police do not believe impairment contributed to the crash.
