A Deschutes County jury has convicted a Bend man of murder in the February 2013 shooting death of his houseguest.

The jury returned around 11:15 a.m. after beginning deliberations on Friday afternoon. The verdict was unanimous.

Luke Wirkkala, 33, was charged with one count of murder in the Feb. 4, 2013 killing of David Ryder, 31, of Bend. The pair had spent the prior day drinking and watching the Super Bowl at the Hideaway Tavern, then went back to Wirkkala’s southeast Bend home to continue drinking. Wirkkala’s defense attorneys had argued he shot Ryder in self-defense after Ryder attempted to force Wirkkala to perform oral sex on him and tried to strangle him when he resisted. Wirkkala then shot Ryder at close range with a 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun.
