Updates on 5 Fusion chef in Bend, Crossroads in Madras

James Beard finalists — Finalists for the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef: Northwest” were announced March 18. Advancing to the final round were Portland chefs Naomi Pomeroy, of Beast, and Cathy Whims, of Nostrana, along with Seattle chefs Jason Franey, of Canlis; Ethan Stowell, of Staple & Fancy; and Renee Erickson, of The Whale Wins. Joe Kim, Jr., executive chef at 5 Fusion & Sushi Bar, in Bend, was one of 20 semifinalists nominated from four Pacific Northwest states. The winner will be announced May 5 in New York.

Crossroads in Madras— The Crossroads Pub and Grill has opened in Madras following a four-month remodel by owners Ralph Ferguson and Jalene Abbot. Located on the north side of town near the Les Schwab Tire Center, the pub offers 11 microbrews on tap and a gourmet menu prepared by chef Virgil “Geno” Rea, formerly of Planet Hollywood in Seattle. Offerings include not just burgers and fish and chips, but also New York steak, chicken curry, a Cobb salad and vegetarian dishes. Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. 107 N.E.
