TAO taiko drummers from Japan perform for 460 first- through fifth-grade Bend-La Pine students at The Tower Theatre in Bend Tuesday afternoon. The performers reside at a 120,000-square-foot site that features three rehearsal halls on Japan’s Kuju Plateau, a national park. Each day, members of the troupe endure a training regimen that includes running, calisthenics and martial arts training, according to literature from the group. Their days span 17 hours, running from 5 a.m. to 10 at night. While TAO’s repertoire consists of traditional Japanese dance and music, the group says it also draws from Korean, Maori and Indonesian cultures.
