Prineville man killed in ATV crash

Driver arrested after crash

A Prineville man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of a 22-year-old after an all-terrain vehicle crash.

Mason Edward Stafford, 31, was allegedly driving the ATV when he crashed the vehicle after 10 p.m. Saturday on private property north of Prineville, on Barnes Butte Road, according to a press release from the Crook County Sheriff’s Office.

Tyler Robert Pierce, 22, of Prineville, was dead at the scene. Stafford was allegedly driving a Polaris Ranger 900 when it crashed and rolled over on top of Pierce, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Two others were also reportedly riding in the vehicle at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries. Stafford was taken to Pioneer Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle, but refused treatment for his injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Stafford was arrested on suspicion of first-degree manslaughter and lodged at the Crook County jail, and has since posted bail and been released.

The crash is still under investigation, and authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor.
