2 La Pine fires erupt despite cold
Two residences were damaged in La Pine Saturday in two separate structure fires, according to a news release from Mike Supkis with the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District.
The first fire was reported at 7:15 p.m. at 15886 Woodland Drive. Firefighters arrived to find an attached garage fully engulfed in flames with the fire traveling into the home.
The occupants were home at the time and were able to exit without injury, Supkis said. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and firefighters returned to the scene several times throughout the night to extinguish hot spots.
A second fire was reported at 4:50 a.m. Sunday morning at a home at 16040 Woodland Drive. The fire started in a shed sharing a common roof with an attached mobile home. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the shed and prevent any damage to the mobile home.
The occupants were able to exit with no injury. The fire is believed to have started in a wall heater unit.
Jefferson County school canceled
There is no school today for Jefferson County students, according to the district website.
Heating and water issues in multiple buildings, coupled with freezing temperatures, caused school officials to cancel school for all Jefferson County School District 509-J schools. The website did not say whether school would reopen on a regular schedule Tuesday.
Also, Tumalo Community School is closed today.
