Black Friday sales aren’t the only bargains offered on Thanksgiving weekend. To celebrate the world premiere of The Portland Ballet’s new “Day by Day” — which will be performed in Portland over Thanksgiving weekend, along with “Firebird” — all tickets to the first performance on Friday, Nov. 27 are just $5.
“Day by Day” was choreographed by TPB’s new co-artistic director, Anne Mueller, and is set to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s jaunty String Quartet No. 17 in B flat Major. It is described as a witty and charming character piece, portraying the comedy and emotion of a day in the life of one family. Mueller also drew on her favorite children’s books by Roger Hargreaves, Russell Hoban and Shel Silverstein for visual inspiration.
The piece is fully realized with professionally designed backdrops, costumes and lighting, plus live music at every performance from the Portland State University Orchestra.
The playful humor of “Day by Day” contrasts with the drama and sophistication of “Firebird,” which is based on a Russian fairy tale with Igor Stravinsky’s classic score. This is a reprise of TPB artistic advisor John Clifford’s 2005 version of the thrilling and technically challenging ballet. It tells the story of Prince Ivan, who must battle the evil sorcerer Kaschei with the help of a magical Firebird to free 13 captive princesses. The piece’s impact is enhanced by elaborate sets, costumes and masks.
The full cast for the Thanksgiving weekend performances includes 98 dancers under the age of 22 from TPB’s new pre-professional career track program and its youth company.
Six performances of “Day by Day” and “Firebird” will be staged at Lincoln Performance Hall on the Portland State University campus from Nov. 27-29, with shows at 1 and 4 p.m. each day. All seats for the 1 p.m. performance on Nov. 27 cost $5 and are available at the box office starting one hour before show time, with payment via cash or check only.
Advance reserved seating for all other performances costs $35 for adults and $15 for youth ages 18 and under. Family packs with two adult and two youth tickets cost $90 and additional youth tickets can be added for $10 each. Limited quantities of rush tickets are available for $5 at the box office one hour before each show time.
