A survey by the National Retail Federation says that more than 147 million people plan to shop Black Friday this year.

Last year, roughly 152 million people said they intended to shop the after-Thanksgiving sales rush, while a subsequent survey found that 220 million actually did shop.

Consumers will be after numerous items. Clothing and clothing accessories are the most popular gift category, according to a separate National Retail Federation survey. About 59 percent of shoppers will buy gift cards, which are the most requested gift item.

Children are also high on the list: 45 percent of adults surveyed say they will buy toys this season.

And jewelry purchases are expected to go up this holiday season to their highest levels since 2007, the survey says. About 23 percent of shoppers plan to buy jewelry as a gift.
