Firefighters climb stairs for charity — The Bend Fire Department finished 15th out of 177 teams last month at the 22nd annual Seattle Scott Firefighter Stairclimb. Firefighters from across the Northwest climbed the Columbia Center building (788 feet high with 1,311 steps) in full gear to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Bend captain Scott Wyman took 19th place overall in the event with a time of 13 minutes, 20 seconds. Collin Ellingson, a 12-year-old La Pine boy battling a rare form of lymphoma, served as inspiration for the 14 Bend firefighters who raised more than $25,000 over the past few months. The Sunriver Fire Department finished 96th as a team. In 2012, the event brought in a record $1.2 million for blood-cancer research and patient services. Light of Hope set for April — The sixth annual Light of Hope run/walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 21, at Riverbend Park in Bend. The event, which starts at 9 a.m., will include 10K, 5K and 1K distance options. The event is a benefit for Court Appointed Special Advocates, an organization that uses trained volunteers to advocate for abused or neglected children going through the court system. Cost is $30 for the 10K or 5K with a T-shirt, or $20 without a shirt. The 1K costs $10 for the entire family. Register at www.casaofcentraloregon.org or in Bend at Fleet Feet Sports, 1320 N.W. Event benefits United Way — Mt. Bachelor ski area is currently offering $25 weekday lift-ticket vouchers to help raise funds for United Way of Deschutes County. The fifth annual Mt. Bachelor Charity Ski Week fundraiser will be held April 8-12 and April 22-26. Mt. Bachelor provides lift-ticket vouchers to United Way of Deschutes County, and those vouchers can be redeemed for a $25 full-day lift ticket. Roughriders roll in Medford — The Bend Rugby Club’s Roughriders got two tries each from Mike Hunter and Clint Peterson on their way to a convincing 49-5 victory Saturday over Rogue Valley. Nate Tow, Mike Gamm and Mike Morrelli each scored a single try for the winners, and Hunter made all seven of his conversion attempts. Also on Saturday, the Bend Rugby Club women notched a 45-5 home win over the Boise Nemesis at High Desert Middle School. Erica Cardwell led Bend with four tries.

Basketball

Registration open for youth clinic — Registration is now open for a youth basketball clinic scheduled for July 13-14 at the Athletic Club of Bend. The Showcase Basketball clinic is open to boys and girls ages 7-17. It is directed by Jeff Christensen, a former NCAA Division I basketball player who has coached in the NBA Development League. Participants will practice NBA-style drills and skill work. Cost for the clinics is $50 before May 1, and $100 after May 1. Register at www.showcasebasketball.com.
