Bend skiers dominate at Crescent Lake — Santi Ocariz led a top-10 sweep by Bend skiers at the 2013 Crescent Lake Challenge, a 22-kilometer freestyle nordic race held March 10 near the Crescent Lake Sno-park. Ocariz finished in a time of 51 minutes, 49 seconds, to win by a comfortable margin over runner-up Reitter Hodgett, whose time was 53:32. Marshall Greene finished third in 54:33. The first female finisher was Bend’s Mary Wellington, who placed eighth overall in 1:02:25. Another Bend skier, Alyce Pearce, was second among the women and 10th overall in 1:02:54. Fifty-three skiers finished the fourth annual Crescent Lake Challenge.
Local chapter seeks bocce partners — The High Desert chapter of Special Olympics Oregon (SOOR) is seeking volunteers to serve as partners with Special Olympics athletes in the sport of bocce, a ball sport that resembles lawn bowling. Volunteers will practice with their Special Olympics partners starting in mid-April on Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Juniper Elementary School in Bend. The teams (Special Olympians and their volunteer partners) will take part in regional competition in Eugene on June 22 and in state competition July 13-14 in Newberg. Youth teams need coaches — Two volunteer coaches are needed for teams in the Bend Park & Recreation District’s girls fast-pitch softball program. Coaches are needed for teams in the 8-10 age group. The season runs April 1-June 3. Coaches volunteer four to five hours per week. Most games and practices are held on weekdays. Coaching experience is preferred, and a criminal background check will be conducted. Orientation meetings will be held before the season.
