SILVERTON — A man described as armed with a rifle and two handguns was fatally shot in a gun battle with officers Monday after he wounded a man at an Oregon recreational vehicle park.
The gunman was airlifted from the Silver Spur RV park in Silverton, east of Salem, to a Portland hospital where he died of his wounds, Marion County sheriff’s spokesman Don Thomson said.
The dead man was not immediately identified.
A man who was wounded in the park was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, where he was in stable condition, Thomson said. He was not identified.
“Initial reports that there was a second, female victim of the shooter were found to be inaccurate,” Thomson said in a statement. “We have spoken to her and confirmed she was not injured, but did witness the incident.”
No officers were hurt. The officers who fired were not immediately identified.
Initial reports in the Statesman Journal newspaper described the gunman as 80. Thomson did not confirm that and said he had no information about the type of firearms the man used or how many shots were fired.
Sheriff’s deputies responded earlier Monday to 911 calls that described a man walking through the park, randomly shooting at people and RVs. Deputies spotted the man “perched behind a picnic table on a small hill” in the park, Thomson said.
The gunman opened fire at deputies and one deputy returned fire, the spokesman said.
