Nordic skiing

Area skiers excel in Idaho — Leo Lukens won the J2 boys skate-ski individual start race to lead a contingent of Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation and Bend Endurance Academy members at the Bogus Basin Junior National Qualifier staged Feb. 17 in Boise, Idaho. Lukens, who skis for MBSEF, also was eighth in the J2 boys (ages 14-15) 5K individual start classic race on the previous day. Other MBSEF participants were Zeb Millslagle (J2 boys, 16th in 5K classic, 10th in 10K skate), Casey Shannon (J1 boys — ages 16-17, 13th in 10K classic, 15th in 5K skate) and Emily Hyde (J1 girls, third in 10K classic, eighth in 5K skate). Representing BEA, Ryan St. Clair was second in the OJ boys (ages 18-19) 5K skate-ski race, and he tied for third in the 10K classic event.

Lacrosse

Registration deadline approaches — Sunday is the final day to register for the upcoming season of youth lacrosse through the Bend Park & Recreation District. The program is open to boys and girls in grades one through eight and will run April 1 through June 1. Boys and girls in grades one and two will play coed. Grades three through eight will be separated based on gender and will play in divisions of two or three grade levels grouped together. Teams will practice twice per week and will play eight games during the season. Helmets, goggles, sticks and mouth guards will be provided by the park district. Participants supply their own shoulder pads, arm pads and gloves. Cost is $75 for park district residents, $101 otherwise. Registration is available at bendparksandrec.org. Softball

Senior league on tap — Registration is open through March 11 for the Bend 50+ senior softball league’s upcoming season. The league is open to players born in 1963 or earlier. A 14-game season will be played from April 22 through July 31. Games will be scheduled on Mondays and some Wednesday evenings at Bend’s Skyline Sports Complex. Starting today, open practices are slated from noon to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Pine Nursery Park in Bend. Veteran players will be contacted by email. Cost is $60, except for players age 75 and older, who may participate for free.
