The U.S. Forest Service evacuated four campgrounds in south Deschutes County this afternoon, as crews battle a new blaze near Wickiup Reservoir called the Browns Creek Fire.

Cascade Lakes Highway remains open, but Forest Service Road 42 is closed due to fire-related traffic. The fire was reported around 1 p.m. and the cause is currently unknown. Sheep’s Bridge, South Twin Lake, North Twin Lake and Gull Point campgrounds were evacuated.

Jean Nelson-Dean, a spokeswoman for the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center, said the fire has burned an estimated 30 to 40 acres, “and it’s probably growing. We have quite a lot of resources on it.”

This includes three helicopters, the Redmond Hotshots, six engines, law enforcement from the Forest Service and Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and other resources.

A second fire started near Madras just before 2 p.m. and burned one outbuilding, but it was under control by 4:30 p.m., Nelson-Dean said.
